Pay rise explained
Why you do not keep all of a raise
Every extra euro is taxed. Once your pay goes above €46,500, each extra euro is taxed at 40% instead of 20%, plus USC and PRSI. So a bigger raise can feel smaller on your payslip.
An example
Going from €45,000 to €50,000 is a €5,000 raise. You keep about €2,931 of it (59%), because part of it falls in the 40% tax band.
Good to know
Pension contributions can make a raise worth more, because they come off before income tax. Try the take-home pay calculator with a pension to see.
Questions
How much of a pay rise do I keep in Ireland?
It depends on your pay. If the raise falls in the 40% income tax band you keep roughly half of it after USC and PRSI. Below the band you keep about 70%.
Why do I keep less above €46,500?
From 2027 the 40% tax rate starts above €46,500 for a single person, and USC and PRSI apply on top.
Which year's rates does this use?
2027, from Budget 2027, with the scheduled PRSI rise on 1 October 2027 averaged across the year.
Who is this for?
A single person on PAYE with one job. See the take-home pay calculator for the full breakdown.
