Part-years count in proportion. Time on strike, long lay-offs and some other gaps may not count, so your real figure can differ. Weekly pay includes regular overtime and bonuses but not one-off payments.

Redundancy pay explained

How it works

The law gives you 2 weeks of pay for every year you worked, plus 1 extra week. Weekly pay above €600 does not count. You must have worked for the same employer for at least 2 years.

An example

You worked 8 years and earn €800 a week. That is (2 × 8) + 1 = 17 weeks. Pay counts only up to €600, so 17 × €600 = €10,200, tax-free.

Good to know

Your employer may offer more than this. That extra money is called ex-gratia, and part of it can be taxed. Use the redundancy tax calculator for that.

Questions

How is statutory redundancy worked out in Ireland?

Two weeks' pay for every year of service, plus one extra week's pay. Weekly pay above €600 is ignored.

Do I qualify?

You need at least 104 weeks (two years) of continuous service with the same employer, and you must be in insurable employment.

Is redundancy pay taxed?

Statutory redundancy is tax-free. Extra money on top from your employer (ex-gratia) can be taxable.

Has the €600 weekly cap changed?

The cap has been €600 since 2005. In September 2024 the Minister said there were no immediate plans to raise it, and we found no later change. Check gov.ie or MyWelfare before relying on it.
